EDC Votes to Recommend Data Center Moratorium
Economic Development Committee · Meeting of September 23, 2026
Boxborough Economic Development Committee unanimously backs temporary moratorium on new data centers. The 5-0 roll-call vote, led by Chair Abby Reip with members Lavanya Selvaraj, Kelley Price, Megan Connor and John Neyland, recommends Fall Town Meeting Article 2, which would bar new data centers until the Planning Board writes a permanent bylaw or until December 31, 2028. "We need to give the planning board time — that's really what this is about, to get it right," Reip said.
The draft defines a data center as a facility with electrical load over 5,000 kilovolt-amps. The committee, which also welcomed new member Kelley Price and is finalizing its October 3 Village for a Day event, priced golf-hole-style event sponsorships at $105 each and said roughly three of nine target sponsors are confirmed. New Acton-Boxborough School Committee liaison Hillary Grevin told the board the school district represents "the largest portion of each town's budget."
