Select Board accepts $15,500 fire safety grant; defers transfer station renaming to future meeting

Boxborough Select Board unanimously approved a $15,500 fire safety equipment grant and directed staff to assess tree hazards on the Town Common. Chair Kristin Hilberg, with all five board members present, moved acceptance of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services grant, which will fund personal protective equipment accessories and ambulance extrication gear through a fully reimbursable Revolving Fund transfer. After resident Alex Jordan reported a 90-foot Norway spruce fell from the Common in 2019 and struck his house, Tree Warden Ed Kukkula confirmed two similar trees near the property could pose a strike risk given shallow pine roots and windstorm vulnerability.
The Board also unanimously approved Special One Day liquor and food licenses for Fifer's Day on June 20, waived those license fees, and authorized parade permits for both Fifer's Day and Memorial Day. Town Administrator Michael Johns opened preliminary discussion of municipal fee structures, noting Transfer Station disposal fees lag behind escalating waste costs, with Member Samuel Anderson proposing a flat 5 percent across-the-board increase pending future staff recommendations.
