Recreation Commission approves pickleball expansion and previews summer camp hiring.
Recreation Commission · Meeting of April 28, 2026
BOXBOROUGH — Recreation Commission approves pickleball expansion and Flerra staffing plan. Chair Hilary Greven moved to extend the Saturday 8-10 a.m. Beginner Open Play using two courts through the remainder of the season, with Vice Chair Matt Spurling seconding the unanimous vote.
Lead Director Brian Picca reported that Flerra Summer Playground has hired 54 staff members, down 20 from last year due to a 2025 enrollment decline, with 69 campers registered so far and plans to advertise in the Boxborough News and at Liberty to boost registration. The commission discussed a proposed cricket pitch at the soccer field, with concerns raised about its permanent concrete construction conflicting with Fifer's Day and Flerra programming; Greven will propose Fifer's Field as an alternative.
